This is the Springbok Tour cross that was carried onto the rugby field at Hamilton by protesters against the 1981 Springbok Tour in August-September that year. St John’s College faculty and students had a high profile, and a group from the College travelled to Hamilton for this event. The Springbok Tour cross was made by one of the students in his garage, in a hurry, especially for the occasion.
The cross was rescued from obscurity amongst some timber at the College about three years ago and is now part of the College’s archives collection held at the John Kinder Theological Library. Currently, it is on its way to Te Papa in Wellington as part of a display there.
