Remembering Ernest Claud Cook of St John’s College

Born: 17th December 1881 in Mangapai, Auckland.

Died: 18th January 1918 in France. Killed in action, aged 37.

Buried: The Huts Cemetery, Leper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Ernest Claud Cook was a student at St John’s Theological College between 1910 and 1914. He was the only St John’s student who was a Clerk in Holy Orders when he enlisted in 1916 as a Private in the New Zealand Medical Corps. At that time he was the Assistant Curate at St Mary’s Cathedral, New Plymouth.

He was killed in France in 1918 and buried at The Huts Cemetery, Leper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Cook’s name can be found on the St Alban’s Church, Auckland, memorial tower, as well as at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

100th Anniversary Display Note

To mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli an exhibition was held at the John Kinder Theological Library displaying books and archives, as well as biographies of the St John’s Theological College students who served and were killed during World War One.  

These biographies will be posted on this blog over the next week including some significant discoveries we have made while researching these students.
