Cecil Marshall and the Charismatic Movement

The John Kinder Theological Library acquired the papers of the Reverend Cecil Marshall, as part of our archive of nationally significant Anglicans. Marshall was one of the early leaders of the Charismatic Movement within the Anglican Church and from 1975 to 1980 was Director of the Christian Advance Ministries. The goal of the founders of the Christian Advance Ministries was to promote, resource and to help co-ordinate the Charismatic Movement in New Zealand.

The movement developed strong national and international inter-denominational networks, with summer schools and ‘Jesus’ rallies being held regularly in the late 1970s.

Cecil Marshall’s collection of papers include a range of correspondence, subject files and administrative records relating to the movement, which date from the 1960s through to the late 1980s.

The Archive has also recently received the records of the Christian Advance Ministries and these two collections will provide unique insight for researchers into the Charismatic Movement in New Zealand Aotearoa.

We are keen to know of other resources relating to the Charismatic Movement within the Anglican Church and welcome your contributions.

  1. We were very blessed by Christian Advance Ministries through the Annual Seminars.
We were able to get Cecil to come to the small town of Edgecumbe in the Bay of Plenty to speak to a group of men. I think Cecil was surprised when he found that the event was in the lounge bar of the local hotel but he took it in his stride and gave a powerful message to a large group of men.

    1. Hi Chris ,
I would be interested to know if your family is related to mine.
My early relatives arrived in Tasmania 1st October 1842, from Dover on the ship Apoline as recommended workers for the colony. Henry worked for a Mr Amos and started a farm named Blindburn. One of his boys headed off to new Zealand. Dad’s father Robert and and uncle Norman came to WA.
