Welcome to the Wiremu Netana Panapa Collection
Wiremu Netana Panapa was born in Dargaville in 1898.
Panapa was educated at Maropiu School and St Stephen’s Native Boys’ School, Parnell. His grandfather encouraged him to study the Bible and guided him into the service of the Anglican Church. Panapa then entered Te Rau Theological College, Gisborne, where he was on the committee of the Māori newspaper Te Kopara. He then moved to Auckland and obtained his licentiate in theology from St John’s College. He was ordained a deacon in 1921 and a priest in 1923.
In 1997, the Library named the newly formed Māori collection after Panapa, the college’s first Maori graduate. The collection was formed by extracting all works by and about Māori from the main and pamphlet collections. Significant work was and is being done to identify and add to the collection by purchase and donation, as many second-hand titles as possible. All works by and about Māori with the exception of children’s literature and some ‘coffee table’ items are currently purchased. The books from Sir Kingi Ihaka’s library have been added to this collection, or if more appropriate, to the New Zealand and Pacific Collection or Baumber Collection.
how do I go about purchasing a copy of the Wiremu Netana Panapa collection?
